Mutianyu Summer Travel Guide | Two Lightweight Itineraries – Morning & Afternoon

2026-07-17

Important Notice: From July 13 to August 10, 2026, the nighttime tours are suspended. During this period, the scenic area's daytime operating hours are extended to 7:30 PM.

Many visitors are unsure whether to visit in the morning or afternoon—the experience is quite different. Here are two streamlined itineraries to choose from based on your preference.

Morning Session | Catch the Earliest Light – Cool & Relaxed

Key advantages: Fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, a leisurely pace.

7:30 AM – Opening time. Enter right away to avoid the tour group rush after 10 AM. The mountain air is crisp and cool in the early morning, and the Great Wall is quiet and spacious.

Take the cable car directly to No.14 Watchtower. From above, enjoy sweeping views of the forest and the winding wall, with mountain breezes cutting through the summer heat.

Walk at a gentle pace from No.14 Watchtower toward No.23 Watchtower. This stretch offers both flat sections and some challenging parts, suitable for the whole family. Along the way, stop by the famous "Hero Stele" and pass No.15 Watchtower, a filming location for If You Are the One 2. Every step offers a photo-worthy view.

The entire hike takes about 3 hours. The soft morning light is clean and flattering, with few other visitors in your shots—perfect for capturing atmospheric photos.

After descending, head to the service plaza to watch the exclusive performance The Soul of the Great Wall · Qi Jiguang's Army, an immersive show about the frontier soldiers of the Ming Dynasty.

Morning Highlights:

Comfortable temperatures, avoiding the summer heat – hiking feels effortless

Fewer people, cleaner photos – great for photography

Focused on relaxation – no rush, low physical demand

Afternoon Session | Chase the Sunset Light – The Full Experience

Key advantages: Richer performances, stunning golden-hour light.

Visiting the Great Wall in the afternoon is a completely different experience from the morning. After a day of sun, the bricks radiate warmth, and as the light shifts from overhead to the west, the Wall's contours grow more dramatic in the changing shadows.

Recommended entry at 3:30 PM – avoid the harsh midday sun, when the light is softer and the mountain greenery shows richer layers of color. The scenic area stays open until 7:30 PM, giving you plenty of time to explore at a comfortable pace.

From 4:00 to 5:30 PM is the best time of day for portraits and landscapes. The warm, golden light casts a glow on the battlements, and the Wall's ancient texture is amplified.

The afternoon highlight isn't just the Wall—there's also a packed performance schedule (at the cable car upper station platform; closed on Tuesdays):

5:00–5:20 PM – Chinese Martial Arts Demonstration · Hard Qigong – A non-heritage martial arts demonstration with powerful, visually striking moves.

6:00–6:20 PM – Peaceful Land · Qi Jiguang's Army – A stirring performance blending martial grandeur with everyday peace, bringing to life the Great Wall's epic history.

Afternoon Highlights:

Avoid the midday heat and explore at your leisure.

Soft afternoon light gives the Wall's silhouette a dramatic three-dimensional feel.

Enjoy a sense of having the place to yourself.
