Grain Buds (xiaoman, 小满), the eighth solar term in the Chinese lunar calendar, is also the second solar term of summer. It has two meanings in Chinese. Firstly, it refers to abundant rainfall, as the southern Chinese regions experience increased rainfall and frequent showers during this period. Secondly, it is related to agriculture, indicating the maturity of wheat. Grain Buds also embodies the ancient wisdom of life, cautioning against being too full or excessive. It teaches that being modest and humble brings benefits, and that being “xiaoman” is preferable – being full but not overflowing. Life needs space and emptiness, and the best life state is “xiaoman”.
