Awakening of Insects is the third solar term in the twenty-four solar terms. It reflects the state of awakening and growth of natural organisms under the influence of climate changes. "Spring thunder sounds bring everything vitality." Awakening of Insects is a good time with sunny weather, rising temperatures, and increased rainfall. It is a time when all things are full of vitality and crops can be planted. The Chinese farmers have always attached great importance to this solar term, considering it as the beginning of spring plowing.
In history, Awakening of Insects (Jingzhe) was also known as "Qizhe". In modern culture, the name "Qizhe" has been retained in Japan. According to legend, during the Han Dynasty, Emperor Jing, the sixth emperor, had the character "Qi" in his name. To avoid offensiveness, it was changed to the similar meaning character "Jing". (It was offensive to have the same character with the emperor).
In ancient times, people would use incense and mugwort to fumigate their homes on the day of Awakening of Insects, in order to drive away snakes, worms, rodents, and dampness. Over time, this practice evolved into a custom of warding off bad luck and misfortune associated with this solar term.
